Mosaic Art and Wine / MAANZ

We are home safe and sound from MAANZ Symposium 2011, Tanunda, Barossa Valley, South Australia.
What a mix - mosaics, Symposium, good mosaic mates and wine!

Dave and I had a great trip down to MAANZ flying with JetStar. The staff on the ground and in the air with JetStar were so friendly and we had a wonderful flight to Adelaide. Service with style all the way. Thanks so much.

We stayed at a B&B and the thoughfulness of the owners was very much appreciated. It was cosy, warm and had everything we could possibly need to be comfortable during our stay in Tanuda.

The MAANZ Symposium was held in Tanunda and the Theatre complex, was a perfect setting for OzMosaics Vendor Stand and the MAANZ Symposium presenters etc. The gallery in Tanunda was so interesting featuirng a brilliantly restored organ. The history of Tanuda is so interesting and the backdrop of the vineyards is beautiful.

We caught up with friends, made new ones and we can't wait for the next Symposium in Melbourne 2012.

I will upload photos of my experience at MAANZ 2011 soon. We are very busy unpacking a new shipment of Dynasty smalti and new products which will be in our online store next week. I look forward to my workshop at the Redcliffe Festival on Saturday and hope my students enjoy the one day workshop I have planned for them.

Saviours of the Lost Arts - Brisbane

OzMosaics were invited to have a table display about mosaics at the 2011 Saviours of the Lost Arts at King George Square, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Some keen photographers took these two photos as the sun started to fade over Brisbane, late afternoon. They kindly sent them to me and I think the photos tell a little mosaic story...."Where will I be when I go into a mosaic?"

A custom-made kitchen mural was delivered to a Brisbane Client today, see photos on OzMosaics website.

Next on studio bench, is a commission for a huge mermaid/dolphin and large mosaic table top. Also working on set of 10 murals for art show in Brisbane in July and a hundred other things. Life is busy!

USA and Hong Kong mosaic trip

Finally have found a moment to update my mosaic blog!
I had a wonderful trip to SAMA USA. I landed in LA, flew to Dallas, had a great time at Barbara Dybala's fabulous home and new studio.

Drove to Austin Texas with Julie, Barbara and ZengFang with great Texan music all the way! Ate incredible Polish pastries and even joined a band for a hour; Barbara plays a mean set of drums!!!!
I am writing my SAMA story soon. The conference was great, met up with some wonderufl people I have been friends with for years on the 'net! The mosaic gallery had some interesting pieces exhibited. I won a great prize in the famous SAMA raffle, some of Bill Buckingham's lovely rocks.

The Dynasty stand was awesome and very successful, congrats to Barbara and ZengFang, I am proud to stock and supply Dynasty smalti in Australia (I even suggested the name Dynasty! and it stuck!).

After a sad farwell to Barbara and the mosaic gang in Texas, I flew to Colorado to meet up with the famous Amazing GRACE! She collected me at the airport (will tell the story of the dog on the plane in by blog soon) and Grace looked so beautiful with her new, funky haircut! We drove to her breathtaking home in the Colorado mountains and words cannot describe how beautiful and unusual her home is and it complements her stunning art.

Kerry drove from Salt Lake City to meet up and play kilns and mosaics in Grace's studio for 2 days and then I sadly left Grace and family, to drive from Colorado to Salt Lake City with Kerry. Kerry and hubbie were so friendly and I spent much time at a glass studio but also found time with Kerry to explore an amazing salt lake national Park surrounded by snowy mountains. I was in awe! We also visited the Mormon Temples and I was very fortunate to be taken on a tour and the artworks are beyond description! Very interesting and something different to absorb. Thanks everyone! Kerry showed me lots of good things to do in glass kilns and also demo of the torch!

I hope to order my first kiln next month, I have not had time to even think about it until now as I was given a wonderful opportunity to travel to Hong Kong for an exhibition of my art, covering 11 mosaic Easter eggs! Thanks to Dianne Sonnenberg who kindly referred me to this project. xxxxx

Dianne was to be the artist in residence in Hong Kong but other commitments made it impossible for her to attend so she passed the opportunity on to me. I am very grateful. Dianne is very busy working on her mosaics at present, which as usual, are beautiful indeed.

Hong Kong was the mosaic experience of a lifetime. Story coming soon. Photos are on Sandy Robertson facebook profile and a few video clips.

I spent last weekend teaching at Bribie Island Art Centre - a fun weekend indeed! Thanks to Liz and all concerned, for your friendship through the arts. I look forward to the art shows this year!

I am busy designing a huge mermaid/dolphin for a client's pool wall and two mosaic tables, plus meeting up next week with a lovely lady to discuss a kitchen mural.

MAANZ Adelaide is coming up soon and I may have a vendor stand at the conference. I have booked in to the conference and will probably attend if a special school project does not collide with the dates!

So much happening!

I am off to SAMA for the 2011 mosaic conference in Austin Texas! Very exciting. I will be helping on the mosaic smalti Dynasty vendor booth and hope to meet many of my mosaic friends and make more friends!

I will also be visiting an amazing mosaic Artist Grace Blowers in Denver and then on to Kerry Collett in Salt Lake City! Pinch me please!

We will cook up a mosaic storm and may the grout dust never settle.

Mosaic Addiction - it's good for you!

Our hearts go out to all people in Australia who have suffered in the floods and fires this month! It's been devasting for so many and we hope you find the strength to rebuild, refocus and recover emotionally. The community at large has really been put to the test - hopefully you are benefitting from the huge flood of kindness, caring and generosity.

OzMosaics was not flooded and we are grateful to be operating as usual. Our mosaic workshops kick off tomorrow and soon we hope to release our MOS-Oz Mosaic Online School Australia with lots of interesting workshops, topics and mosaic-related activities. MOS-Oz will tie into Studio OzMosaics workshops and the benefit will be to students and lovers of mosaics, all round. It's still in test mode but over coming months you will see it unfold. Register at OzMosaics to receive newsletter updates.

OzMosaics will be very busy this year! So many mosaic projects on the bench and workshops are popular as ever! We will introduce new workshops soon - the new workshops are being matched with online workshops so we have held them back for a bit longer - it will be worth the wait. It's very exciting.

Art for Health's Sake at the Wesley Hospital Brisbane

I am proud to be one of the exhibiting artists at The Wesley Hospital, Brisbane 2001 art show titled "Art for Health's sake".

I will be exhibiting along with very talented Australian artists and if you have the opportunity please take some time to visit the art show.

I have made some Christmas mosaic trivets to help raise funds for the Palliative Care Unit at The Wesley Hospital featuring place mats or mini cheese boards or table centrepieces for your Christmas season festivities. Candle holders, trinket bowls to fill with rum balls or Christmas gifts plus some of my fine art pieces will be included in this show. Come and see my "home is where the 'art is" which recently won 2nd prize at the MAANZ mosaic Exhibition at the Red Hill Percolator Gallery in 2011.

MAANZ Brisbane Exhibition 2010

Sandy received 2nd prize.

Yesterday, Dave, Mum, Aunty Lee, Aunty Alison and I ventured out in the pouring rain to visit the MAANZ 2010 InAugural Exhibition, currently showing at Percolator Gallery at Paddington, Brisbane, Queensland Australia. Afterwards, naturally, we dropped into the OpShop for a few plates, mum is about to make some fabulous sunflowers for my huge studio wall surrounding the garden. Dave stood patiently on, ready to stash the goodies in the 4WD.

We tried to make the MAANZ Official Opening on Friday night, but unexpected family circumstances prevented us attending. It was good to finally get there and one benefit was room to move around with less gallery visitors than on the opening night. It would have been fun though to catch up with many students and friends though on Friday night.

I was thrilled to learn during a mosaic workshop here at OzMosaics Studio on Saturday, that I had been awarded 2nd Prize by the judges in this exhibition. I was over the mosaic moon!

The mosaic standard was very high and we all enjoyed viewing the beautiful mosaics, interestingly, many were of stained glass mosaic style. Is this where mosaics are heading? Fusing, stained glass etc. I like the many facets of mosaics, so I studied the artworks with interest. I was pleased to see smalti and mixed media on show. All in all, the exhibition provides all viewers a good taste of mosaics across the board.

The gallery was a great choice for the exhibition and the organisers did a wonderful job pulling it together. As you wander through the small rooms in the gallery the mosaics take centre stage and if you visit, allow time to absorb the craftmanship and explore the different mosaic styles. Not many opportunties come up for an art exhibition soley concentrating on mosaics.

Listed below are some photographs of the exhibition. I am sure formal photos will be uploaded to the MAANZ site in due course.

I was also happy to see work in the Exhibition, by many of my students. It's so satisfying to watch past students grow in their mosaics and explore so many mosaic opportunities. To have kick-started so many mosaic artists is such pleasure. I look forward to seeing all their future work.

As most of you know, I am very passionate about texture and exploring the seemingly limitless tesserae options, so if you wish to add more spice to your mosaics, perhaps enrol in our upcoming smalti and 3-D classes soon to be listed. The mosaic combo - where anything can happen, expect the unexpected....don't be surprised if you mosaic takes on a mind of it's own, leaving you astounded as you watch your fingers connect to your mosaic 'art strings. In the upcoming workshops, you will be exposed an adhesive I am very passionate about these days; one that allows more flexibility in your 3-D mosaics and well I am in love with it. I could not have made my MAANZ "home is where the 'art is" without a mix of adhesives, but the new one was paramount for the amazing properties and extended mosaics.

Mosaic art can be a lifetime adventure - stretch your limits and go beyond the boundaries. You may end up back where you stARTed but what you gathered on the journey will be evident.

Ipswich Awards of Excellence 2010

Sandy Robertson and members of PANI worked with students, teachers, community and the Ipswich City Council to provide the community of Ipswich with a contemporary mosaic public artwork, installed at Queen's Park Botanical Gardens, Nature Reserve, Ipswich. The new Bilby enclosure forms a magnificent backdrop to the Arena.

The Numbellie Seat. Two huge curved concrete seats decorated with mosaic application. The panels were created by participating school students across 6 State Schools at Ipswich and selected students from Ipswich State High School. The 7schools worked very hard to learn the art of mosaics and achieve such excellence in mosaics. Sandy worked with teachers and volunteers at her OzMosaics Studio to piece the mosaic on mesh artworks together on cement sheet panels, which were inserted into recesses created in the construction of the seat, to Sandy's instructions.

The Numbellie Seat installed at Queen's Park Ipswich won the Award of Excellence and Gold Award 2010!!!!! (update to come with photos of the Numbellie Seat).

Congrats to all involved - a great achievement and I was proud to be involved in the making of these magnificent mosaic public artworks.

A huge mosaic ball was donated by Sandy to Queen's Park. Sandy says "we had mosaic mesh artworks which would not fit on the mosaic seat inserts, so we wove them onto a huge mosaic ball. A table top covered in mosaics was attached at my studio and it formed the taBall! It's gorgeous and a lovely installation to offset the incredible huge mosaic seats.

A look back at the 2009 Winner of the Award of Excellence, Ipswich.

Below are a few photos of the 2009 Award of Excellence at the "Everybody Seat" installed at Karalee State School, Karalee, Queensland Australia. Sandy Robertson worked with students at Karalee State School as Artist in Residence Program.

Together with teachers, students, parents, Indigenous Artist and incredible enthusiasm and support of Cheryl Charlton, Vice Principal Karalee State School, this incredible mosaic sculpture grew. The students are so talented and worked very hard with their mesh mosaics to help building this beautiful seating arena outside the Community Hall on the school grounds.

Proudie, the concretor built this mosaic chair to last! The chair is decorated with mosaic art inside and out. The inner circle with a huge contemporary mosaic snake, the river, gum leaves work well with local history, fauna and flora and indigenous art.

The outer side of the winding seating arena was inspired by Gaudi - a mosaic fantasy as the outer snake winds and shows the student mosaic interpretations of colourful, happy flowers, kangaroos, tracks and more.

Visit and be captivated! The curves are made from china plates to give the lustrous mosaic finish.

A mix of china, porcelain tiles and circles, ceramic floor and wall tile, vitreous glass mosaic, glass beads, polystyrene balls, mosaic fibreglass mesh, concrete, grout and thinset made the base for the beautiful mosaic art. Mosaic seats are popular as a useful community artwork.

"What is Zone 4?"

Mosaic Zone 4 originated many, many years ago during one of Sandy's mosaic Workshops at Studio OzMosaics.

We were discussing the amazing buzz mosaics can bring; the wonderful therapy of closing off your thoughts to all but mosaics; the feeling of mosaic euphoria when your pieces not only connect with the substrate, but connect to your creative being....

The feeling of timlessness. One tends to float over the work in progress and not hear the demands of everyday life around....

If you remember "Get Smart" and the Cone of Silence, you are on the right track. We imagine a huge plastic cone (think of a coke bottle cut in half) encasing us, allowing us to see into the NeverNever but only hear our mosaic thoughts. We are as one with the tiles, the glue, the Leps. We are happy, contented and in the creative zone, our own Zone.

Research at OzMosaics shows that it can be a one on one mosaic love affair in the Zone 4 shield, or a group can connect around a mosaic and feel the Zone 4 bond.

My latest whimsical mosaic, Home is Where the 'art is (ie Mosaic Retreat) was made in Zone 4. It emerged as my hands flew and each piece just seemed to know what it was going to connect with as I felt that mosaic Zone 4 surge of silliness, sublimity (my new word! Zone 4 priveleges) and more.

The Red London Bus is taking us to Zone 4, where the Land of mOz floats above the Mosaic Studio. The Cherub on Cloud 9 knows that you may need to rest and where better than to float in the mosaic atmosphere.

The Glasshouse mountains and the Yellow mosaic Brick Road, are mosaic milestones and tourist destinations and the way to mosaic Euphoria. Serendipity, the mosaic nymph is waiting to show you around and as you arrive fireworks welcome you from Brisbane Story Bridge below.

The Bridge tells it's own story as it reflects in the flowing Brisbane River below. The pink vat is catching mosaic recycled water droplets to irrigate the mosaic pastures and gardens at Zone 4.

Runway Bride!
This is the start. Her bridal headpiece is made from a slice of a white china bowl. Trendsetter Bride.

She will strut the Catwalk in her bridal mosaic hair, veil and confetti, stalked by the paparazzi and showered with confetti. All in a Catwalk Model's normal day, but the thinset and crystal hair embellishments may be a first but at $100,000 a day, it's not a big problem for this haughty, upmarket fashion Diva!

"I suppose the headpiece will help keep the confetti out of my eyes". I am quite interested how the artist will attach the veil, made out of mosaic mesh, the finest mesh available.....
Crystals and pearls, confetti and glitter will be tossed at the veil by the artist to give the "just married" special effects. I have not been married, but this fashion show is fun....

Oh! The artist is threading the NUtulle under the cap and out through a wider cut in the top of the "headpiece". Glad she is not stapling it to my head!
Very clever use of a special glue, I must say!

The front frill will be trimmed back later....and have lots of crystals attached.....

The veil mosaic flower for my hair takes shape. Sandy is a floral mosaic artist expert! I love the gold edging, Sandy tells me she has done this for many, many years to achieve a special effect on cut china edges and her students love this technique Sandy invented.

Gold wire, threaded through mesh was Sandy's idea a long time ago....it's been used everywhere. The mesh "implants" make it so easy to embed mesh wire and other fabulous mosaic additions...lace, shoelaces,wires, beads, leather, feathers, if it can be wired in, it's been done!

I am working on a mosaic of a Queensland Colonial - I will do a series over the next year.

It's very unusual and interesting. I can't say more as it's for an art show entry and I hope it makes the cut LOL!

If not, it's going to be lovely on the walls of perhaps Vanellis Restaurant. Have you dined at Vanellis at Alexandra Hills yet.

Well hurry and do so. The food is DELICIOUS and the chef is a master at pizzas and desserts that will have you licking your fingers~!

Mysterious things go pop in the night

I was given a wonderful windscreen from a station wagon to use as crackle glass in some upcoming mosaic art.
Today we awoke to find the screen has toppled itself over and produced the glass babies!

I wanted to video the process but the glass was obviously dying to get into the mosaic mural I am making today, so shattered itself.

This is really wonderful, the glass knows ahead how to perform!

We ordered the DYNASTY smalti in lovely chunky blocks, all wonderfully irregular but with a coarser backside to grip better but the smalti can be nibbled with your tile nippers, Leponitts or tile scorer….(hammer for awesome shapes). Now you can cut flowers in a bigger format than the smaller traditional brick. A simple nip to cut it down or perhaps shape a flower. Mix it up…mosaics are about emotion, not cutting technique. Once you have mastered the nipping and shaping, the hardest thing is resisting all the beautiful colours.

Wear Sunscreen when making mosaics!

It's important to keep yourself safe from glass and grout but its VERY IMPORTANT to wear sunscreen when working on mosaics or installing them outdoors!

Wear 30+ sunscreen, a very shady hat, long sleeve cool cotton tops, loose pants to prevent burning your legs and sunglasses! Drink water regularly and don't get overheated.

It's important that you last as long as your mosaics! Or as long as possible. Take care in the harsh Australian Sun this summer!

Put up a sunshade, work in the cooler mornings and late afternoon. Avoid heatstroke and enjoy your mosaics.

That's a mosaic order!

Is the Mosaic Art World being subtly divided into Mosaic Masters and Mosaic Makers? Is the Great Divide good? Does it matter? Knowledge is available to everyone today, so a creative spark can ignite anywhere, any time and burst onto the scene!

....and they might not even know what has gone before...........

In some studios, there are those hardi hammering Masters of mosaics with their followers and in the other garages are mosaic makers who thrive on the simple joy of making mosaics....alone and surrounded by the lawn mower their inspiration comes from a different place, but is placed well.Mosaic Masters used to be something almost revered from the past, to visit in a gondola or museums - now they are on the internet and age is not always a play.

Competition is also blurring the line that subtly divided. Now everyone can become a master of their own mosaic destiny. Time has nothing to do with it. Age has nothing to do with it. Popularity is won in many ways. The public opinion is not sought or much romanced - a board of mosaic artists usually decide and often the Public Vote for Most Popular astounds the Masters and the Judges. It's very interesting.

Is it wrong to make what is popular, what the people want? If you go into a competition with the aim of winning and winning over people, does that make you tick? Are you totally honest with your inner artist? Quietly watching but working away on crafting their mosaics into some fine work, are the people who have collectively influenced mosaics over the last 10 years - new on the mosaic block but respectful of mosaic history.

Whilst admiring the undisputed talents of mosaic superstars, they are happy to be referred to as a craftsperson, an artist, whatever..... it is the mosaic outcome that pleases them not the branding or the fame and fortune.

Fame and fortune often emerge when least expected - it can be honed, but sometimes it just happens. Does this turn you on or off mosaics? Does competition get your Leponitt wheels spinning with desire or is it a turn off?Some goals are simple - teach ordinary people with a passion to find their creative self, prepare home-made mosaics from a range of supplies - without lifting the mosaic bar so high that the average beginner won't be terrified of making a bad cut or have a grout space that doesn't meet the supposed standards. (There is no rule for grout spaces by the way, unless you are doing a very tight bathroom wall tiling job and the client is totally obsessed with alignment!).

Tiling a bathroom is not the same as mosaic expressive art! It's sometimes does your mosaic mind good to hose down the big planted picture. Don't always be a contestant, be an explorer of yourself. Some have been in the mosaic business a long time bute haven't moved forward a step, but they are happy with where they are stuck. It's good for them. Is it good for you? Only you can decide that.I don't like seeing anyone manipulated and are should be a joyous thing. Some don't like the competitive thing, some love it.

If you are not published in a book, CD, or magazine - if your opinions aren't blasted over the net, it doesn't mean you are not doing something meaningful, constructive or simply amusing with your own art.Mosaics shouldn't be rushed? That's such an unfair statement. Should a runner slow down? Each works to the beat of their own 'art. It should be enjoyed.

It is not about being better than someone else. You may have a more grouted goal in mind. Some are not part of the competitive scene and never will be and they are so wonderful to discover by accident or fate. My students bowl me over with their creative ideas and it's humbling.

They work and create, mixing up life and smiling as they work and play. It's knowing and respecting where mosaic art comes from, but being excited about not knowing fully where it's headed. Whether preparing mosaics simply or deliciously over the top - it's your own mosaic call. When you look at the real mosaic picture, the vast majority of the mosaic population are at home making a pot, a table or exploring for tiles and plates.

Many work and find their mosaic making a source of relaxation, stimulation and finding like-minded people to share their mosaic joy. Some mosaic mojo's go into overdrive, creative juices boiling and the beginners are the ones to watch. They come to the mosaic table these days, armed with info from the net and more! They absorb mosaic pictures and their mosaic mind's eye beams into action!If you are old enough to hold a hammer you are old enough to mosaic and give everyone a run for their mosaic money. Sure it's important to know the basics, but from lack of initial mosaic expertise, good things have grown.

Mistakes turn into mosaic marvels and the world is constantly hungry for new things to try. Mosaic Fine Art is not in every home, but lots other fabulous mosaic art is! Go and explore some gardens! Check out the decks and verandas! I love the way people make mosaics fit into their lifestyle! Bed heads, tables, pool art, sculpture and more!

You can have your own mosaic museum and it's so beautiful to enjoy.Go find a wall and cover it with mosaics! The people will come! It's up to you if you use rocks and stones and bones....or teacups, smalti and glass. Whether it's flamboyant or quietly questioning, it's yours!

Considering how little variety the mosaic masters of old had on their mosaic palettes, mosaic makers today are seriously challenged with choice - so much!This causes problems too - there are mosaic fads and they are fun. But where are you placed in this mosaic ARENA? Do you stick with smalti or run to the thrift shop. Do you worry about what the art snobs will say? Don't you know a plate can cost more than a kilo of smalti and be so much more precious - but what does it matter? Materials should be seen as the heart of your mosaics.

Fashion and shape them to make them come alive or be seductive secreted into the thinset. The lure of the Leps or the Hardi and Hammer, whatever works - pick it up. The tools fashion what you see in your mind's eye. Romance the tools if you want, but in the end, don't forget they are simply there to shape the way.Many will stand on mosaic soapboxes and encourage people with the intent to sell - books, products, their art - come what may. Just be true to yourself and don't be intimated by other people's art or attitudes.

Back then, it was a land of hammers, marble and glass.....now it's the land of mosaic plenty. So whether you make plenty of mosaics or simply want plenty of time to relax and enjoy the art - it's your mosaic call.Once people tended to make mosaic pots now it's all about Fine Art...when mosaic pots can be covered in Fine Art fit for a Palace! Stimulate yourself with lots of substrates and keep swimming in your own stream, not just the mainstream.

Find your own mosaic recipe and enjoy the taste testing. Do it with love and it will flow and grow. Don't do it for everyone else's expectations or inspections. You might never have imagined yourself as an artist whilst snipping glass and plates, but be prepared to bloom!You might come to mosaics by accident and it might just be the best thing to let loose!A beautifully made piece of mosaic in the garden may be all you need to satisfy your mosaic or artistic longing.

Who knows?It might be simple but full of delicious tesserae, woven amongst the thinset – telling a story or simply a beautiful mosaic scape.To children you will be absolutely inspiring and remarkable in every mosaic way. Let them help you and become tomorrow's artist today.I want children to know where their creative juices come from and for some it is mosaics.

Have a wonderful relationship with your own mosaics - you can only enjoy other's art and be pleased for their growth when you are happy in your own mosaic arena. So home grown mosaics or studio produced marvels are all part of the mosaic world.

Revel in your part of it. Creativity is important - so listen to what your hands and heart are telling you and get rid of any other noise in your head. Be proud of what you create - it's all a part of you.Now to clean up the studio - which is still attached to my garage!

Remember if you put your ‘art’s in the right place, everything falls into place. Expect the unexpected and explore you!

Spring into Mosaics!
Yesterday, whilst Mum, Dave and I were out casting our vote in the current election, we visited our closest Bunnings store.I bought 5 terracotta garden pot/planters to do samples for making mosaic pots, with some fabulous tiles we are adding to the mosaic shop very soon.I bought a gorgeous lavender plant and paper daisies and they are the inspiration for the mosaic designs on the pots.

When the current mosaic tables are off my workbench table (!) I will video and photograph the steps for my online workshops and for upcoming hands on workshops here.I hope to to start a new wave of mosaic pot madness as I thinkt the mosaic garden pots are awesome. I have some wall pots that will be included in our major wall design here at the STudio, start date Spring!So it will be fun, outrageous and bring back the mosaic pot to the status it deserves!I am going Potty for Spring.

I even have a goZunder to decorate with china blooms.

Busy making mosaics!

How time flies by! The mosaic exhibition has been in full swing at Bribie Arts Centre. We had a workshop re the design and planning of a mosaic mural.

This weekend I have a full mosaic workshop and today I did the design and quote for a mosaic table for a client. I have lots of quotes to do next week and a sample of a mosaic portrait for a church commission pending, so it's busier than ever. Add to that a community art mural and park mural it's mosaics full blast.

I am working on new workshops to add to OzMosaics mosaic school classes and can't wait to release the topics and the dates in May. We will resume Mosaic Addict Days in May and will send a newsletter out to anyone on our mailing list. Join it on the site, if you wish to receive the upcoming newsletter by email.

OzMosaics SMARTAmosaics on line is coming. Working very, very had on this, compiling "tons of info" on line. It's very exciting.

The weather is turning cooler and I have bought bright pink and red tights to brighten up my workshop days in winter at the studio. Looks funny but I find colour inspires me as I work, so why not on my legs too! Plus anything pink seems to send off good vibes in the mosaic world.

Thanks to all those who email me everyday and share such fun things on Facebook. Our facebook pages will be merged with SMARTAmosaics in the near future, keeping everything accessible to my students. We will also incorporate Twitter (I have made my own Twitter logo, coming soon, for a bit of mosaic fun and games).

So much mosaic stuff to share and make - it's for life! A quick good wish and hug to the wonderful Polly from the Trolley, who is spending many days by her daughter's side in hospital. Tons of healing pink light is always being sent your way.

Popette advises that being a NANA for the first time is very busy and very wonderful. She has been away from mosaics for a little while, but once little Lili is throught the first baby stages, we will get Popette back in the studio and teach Lili how to mosaic!

I still have about 5 mosaic shoes to complete for members in MAG who made shoes but did not receive one - which is dreadful, I should have done them last year - but what a thrill when they arrive! It's been driving me crazy not sending these MAG members their mosaic shoe which they missed out on the the MAG shoe swap a couple of years ago -

Believe me they are on the workbench and ready for completion. It's my way of saying sorry that your mosaic swap partners did not follow through - these things happen in all groups and swaps and we have learnt from this, that there are better ways to run a mosaic SWAP, so that is a good thing too. Better to try than never do anything! So I need a good mosaic boot on my behind LOL to get them finished. The years seem a whirlwind of mosaics and why do things crop up unexpectedly? Such is life.

Sandy's work is on display at the Liz & Friends Art Exhibition at Bribie Island Community ARt Centre - Gallery.

It's a wonderful art show and if you have time over the Easter Break, take a drive to Bribie Island and enjoy the beautiful Bribie! I enjoyed setting up the show last Saturday and had time out for a refreshing paddle and chased some soldier crabs. I took lots of photos at the gallery of my mosaics and also of the ocean!

It's a great day out all round! I will be back on Tuesday for a mosaic workshop - planning, demo of techniques and discussion for the new mural for the mosaic sign at the Centre. Can't wait to meet the enthusiastic artists!

I am featuring china, rocks, mirror, Italian Orsoni Smalti, vitreous mosaic glass tile and shards of slate. One mosaic is called "the great Fall of China". Seeing is believing. Join CLUB mOz to see the making of this mosaic soon. CLUB members are now able to enter the Social ARENA and we almost have the mOzaicMAG updated. It's wip on the site.

Nine Ladies Dancing - King George Square - Artist Dozen - Brisbane city council

Monday Morning, alarm goes off at 4.45am! Dave and I leap out of bed and prepare to pack the trailer with the nine ladies dancing - mosaic murals I have created for the King George Square, Artist Dozen, 12 Days of Christmas Carol project - Brisbane City Council - 2009.

Rain and storms were forecast - anxious eyes watched the heavens over Brisbane City Hall and the King George Square. I thought it was a good line " we are thinking outside the mosaic square" at King George Square. I wished to show visitors and residents of Brisbane that mosaics are not all "flat" so my take on the Christmas Carol, was Ladies at BrisVegas, dancing in the Square and outside of the square. No square dancing here...Pole dancers, go-go dancers, can-can, show girl dancer, water ballet (the costume on this dancer was made from a gold kitchen scourer, so it was waterproof!!!!!)....two girls from the Moulin Rouge (legs are the stems of the cocktail glasses)....a belly dancer and a 2 metre tall mosaic dancer.....

Three of the dancers are in the "bird cate" the can-can, go-go and belly dancer!

The tall dancer on the reverse side of the huge polystyrene Number 9 has her dancing arms outstretched to the glittering mirror mosaic disco ball which is epoxied to the top of the number 9!

Lots of people danced around the number 9 and hundreds of photos were being taken. Children with parents were filling the Square on such a beautiful evening. It was good to see the Square being used. The artwork pulled people back to the Square.

Sandy Robertson made a bird called "hope" and Veronica Schubert made a bird called "pink healing light".

Sandy added finishing touches to both birds and photographed them before they took flight and left the nest...headed to be installed at Ronald McDonald House by the MAANZ Brisbane project team.

We enjoyed making these birds. Sandy's bird has a mosaic bird, the soul mate...and is a symbol of hope and encourgment...take wings and fly....on a wing and a prayer....

To all guests at Ronald McDonald House, may your dreams come true, hold on to hope and we send Pink Healing Light.....

Partridge in a Pear Tree - Number 1 Day 1

Day One - I love this artwork. The artist has done Partridge in a Pear Tree - a combination of laminated timber, wool/string and nails has resulted in an imaginative and extremely detailed artwork. This number 1 is in King George Square, Brisbane, Queensland Australia.

Even has a big slot for large letters to Santa. I have some very special wishes for Santa - for some very special people who deserve some extra happiness in their lives! I know they have been nice and not naughty! Please Santa deliver something to you know who!!!

Exciting news!

I have been selected as one of the Artist Dozen - 12 artists will work on a 2 metre high number - the Twelve Days of Christmas Carol -
is being depicted in artwork (but think outside the square!). King George Square?

Each day, 12 days before Christmas (December 24th) an artist will be in KGS from 7am till afternoon, painting or in my case, covering the tall number in mosaic art.

My theme "9 ladies dancing". I am working on the design in OzMosaics Studio and I will share the making of it on the OzMosaics website.

It's very interesting and I am in mosaic madness mode, but mosaic magic will prevail! Lots of mosaic addicts are keen to take part.

So if you get the opportunity, visit Brisbane City and check out King George Square and give the artists a cheer on.

Mosaic weekend

Saturday = Mosaic making direct and direct mesh method. Fabulous workshop and such fun!
Sunday = advanced "taking mosaics to a higher level" workshop - amazing students and fabulous 3-D mosaic project completed by all students. Well done!

Dave and I attended the opening of the Numbellie Seat project last Thursday. I am working on the story for the website today and it was a wonderful ceremony. I was so proud to have been involved in this project.

The big tAball looks great in the Nature Centre of Queen's Park and everyone should visit to see the mosaics. The Japanese Gardens are exquisite and so tranquil, restful and inviting. Ipswich Council have done an outstanding job at Queen's Park...you need a day or two to explore it!

Workshop A on Saturday and Workshop B on Sunday was full and fun! Roberto from Canberra stayed with us in the Diva Room and did so well to do the back to back workshops. She couldn't get on the plane fast enough on Sunday night to start making mosaics with thinset and paint in thinset!

I am sure she is working away now as she was so keen.

Thanks to Cat who ran back to the studio with a bottle of wine as a thank you, it made me quite emotional and very appreciative of her comments on the wonderful day of mosaic making.

Cat makes mosaics in Brisbane and I was proud to have inspired her for her future commissions and artworks, of which she has been very profuse.

It's so good to have a mosaic connection with another professional mosaic artist and a great bond in more ways than one. So Cat, thank you!!!!

The other students had previously done the first mosaic class and were ready to work in thinset and china and lots more interesting materials. We hit the mosaic studio floor running and their artworks are excellent. I wonder how many wheelbarrows full of flowers with incredible cement trees are hanging in gardens.....perhaps it's a "mosaic sign".....and hundreds of gOzundas with the matching gift wine bottles LOL....I must get and make mine for Christmas gifts. It's quite addictive.

I am working on a mosaic Christmas Tree with a mosaic "difference" and will share the process with my CLUB Diva members, my students and members of MANA. We will set up a donation box for the fact sheets for a worthy Christmas Charity. I will advise when the sample and fact sheets are ready, very soon. I am sure everyone will love this mosaic project.

Polystyrene is the current word around here and it was my pleasure to guide so many people down this track for their mosaic sculptures;; I have been using polystyrene since I started making mosaics and just keep find more wonderful things to do do with it.

I am starting on the gigantic ball this week for Queen's Park, Ipswich and a design for a law firm and the mosaic for Australia Zoo Steve Irwin Day auction. All to be done in about 2 weeks.

Life is never dull. I am so grateful I have Dave behind me all the mosaic way. He is a wonderful partner in mosaics and I could never do it without him.

Mum is coming to work on some mosaics soon and I have a trip to Ipswich on Thursday for a mosaic afternoon lecture and hands on mosaic making with school teachers. Lots of prep work for that meeting to be done tomorrow.

It's a little windy here in Brisbane today and I am praying for rain this afteroon. I might have to do the vegemite rain dance again......

Shaq seems to be back on his feet and I am so happy as I was worried about our cat over the last couple of weeks. Everyday is very special with Shaq.

So, off to get busy, just had a lovely cuppa with a mosaic student from 2 years ago at the Grafton Arts Fest mosaic workshops. She and her hubby are wonderful people and it was just to share some fun memories and have a roam about the studio.

I wish I did not have a pile of novels on my bedside table, they are calling out to me....reading is my reward after long days and nights in the studio. I am still trying to work out my weird dream last night - a woman had a pair of shoes that looked like a wax orange and I was trying to wear them, broke the "heel" and was soldering the wax when I woke up; a nightmare repair job. LOL! I was so glad to wake up. I think it has to do with something about epoxy and what I want to do to the epoxy Laticrete adhesive .......Dr Des, you make me laugh so much with your last email....don't worry thinset is still your best option. See you when you are down here this week.

So come on, please rain, but don't flood anyone! Rain, rain, rain.....my trees need you! My mosaic pelican is back in the studio and perhaps he will step out of the mosaic and bring some rain poolside.

I attended the MAANZ 2009 Mosaic Symposium, Groundswell at the Mercure Hotel in Brisbane last weekend, with several mosaic artists and students from OzMosaics Studio.

We enjoyed the presentations and workshops. On Sunday we had a mosaic "pink" event in the form of an afternoon tea on the Diva Deck and a sausage sizzle dinner. Of course we made mosaics and watched snippets of videos and slide shows from the making of the Steve Irwin Mosaic Mural Tribute. It was great fun to be together with mosaic mates from as far as Tasmania, Cairns, New Zealand and in between.

We worked on the mural for MANA called Euphoria and it's looking FANTASTIC. Photos coming soon of her glorious tresses. WebKat was here and it was great for everyone to meet up.

We visited Australia Zoo on the Monday after the Symposium and the murals look fabulous on the outer walls of the crocoseum building/food hall. I loved the elephants and tigers and will make a mural of a tiger before Steve Irwin Day 2009.

The train trip to Australia Zoo is fun and the courtesy Australia Zoo bus makes the whole trip simple and relaxing.

Lots of photos coming...busy getting ready for beginner workshops here at the studio tomorrow. The mural panels for Queens Park are being installed next week!

wedding bells

It was a great day for a wedding...my nephew Jayce Hinkley married his sweetheart Marianne, on Saturday 3rd October 2009 - and we had a wonderful time at the wedding and the reception.
Brad and Lauren, Mark and Shelley looked gorgeous and it was wonderful having them with us to celebrate.

Can you dance too much? It was so much fun and the Victoria Park Golf Club was a beautiful setting.

Wow - Wow - wow!
My nephew Jayce married his sweetheart Marianne last Saturday and it was a picture book wedding. Glorious weather, beautiful setting at the Victoria Park Golf Club and a great atmosphere.

The big marquee featured gigantic chandeleirs, city views at night, amazing canopies of flowering purple jacarandas. The food was delicious, roses were everywhere~!!!!!!!!! The table settings were elegant and so beautiful.

Wow, had the most wonderful back to back workshops here at the studio over the weekend and reached new “mosaic highs”. Got to love thinset and more!More new tips and tricks emerged yesterday, it just keeps getting better ... Found something to do with sealer that has my mosaic mojo on fire.

The students make the most incredible things with thinset – they are gobsmacked, one girl was so emotional over her work and would not put the lid on the box as she could not stop looking at it. It’s mosaic nirvana when that happens. I know that feeling, when I make a mosaic and can’t go to bed at all, I just have to sit and look at it, welcome it to my mosaic world and lose myself in Zone 4…..it’s very special.

I have on video, the most freaky thing! When one of the students, Leilani, cut an antique fine china cup, of her grandmothers, a very, very, very special cup, we blessed the cup in the mosaic ritual…, (you have to be here - to know how we bless the cups, we really always want to preserve the main china bits but keep the base for a wheel, the most amazing thing happened; the cup broke in half, the base fell off in a perfect circle and well, 6 students and I were gobsmacked.

I have seen lots of amazing things, when cutting china, but this was extraordinary. When I get time I will put the clip in MANA. The bonsai tree created in one mosaic, in the background is called “Pear in a Partridge Tree”. Dave is uploading the photos now and I will put in MANA tomorrow – hilarious. You will not believe what these students created in one day and the special mosaic effects.

The mosaic pieces are to die for. There was a couple in the advanced class, yesterday from the Sunshine Coast and the fellow was really good for a mosaic ”tease”. Poor fellow. His work was so exquisite and you could not meet a nicer couple who mosaic together…sort of makes your h’art sing.

This is what makes getting up worthwhile:

A student emailed this today; II have been filling the Hordern treasure chest with special mosaic momentos……. It’s very touching -

“What I got out of the Advanced/3D Workshop….I loved the process of breaking Grandma’s precious tea cup and then seeing it as petals of a beautiful flower and the fact that it lives on in a 3D mosaic. I loved that from cut tiles, broken wine bottles, copper wire, beads, shells and slate that I created a mosaic that came to life. The added pleasure is that it was made with my own hands and my imagination, Sandy you give of yourself and in turn give us a very special gift, the ability to believe that we are all artists. Thank you. Leilani”

Even though it was non stop weekend and we had a visitor, a “mosaic stARTIST”, my new name for beginners to mosaic stARTIST workshops, staying in the Diva Suite for 3 days, it was incredibly good fun -not to mention the photographs and the music. Dave spoilt us all with great food and we can’t wait to have our house guests over MAANZ and the fun time at Oz Zoo and the smashing and crashing time on the “mosaic menu”. Those coming to the Sunday Mosaic Madness afternoon and evening will certainly be in for a smashing good time!

I had a wonderful chat with Scott Harrower last week, an amazing mosaic artist in New South Wales. A good catch up!

I am sorry I have been AWOL from MANA for a few days, I even had to CLEAN THE HOUSE! Yes, very frightening words but it felt so good when it was done. I am coming into a good mosaic phase now. So many plans to come to fruition finally. One the big seating arena is done and installed in a couple of weeks, it’s all systems go!

Brad has an amazing girlfriend here from Canada for a year and she is perfect in every way. I am so lucky as she helps me “empty” Chardonnay bottles (perfect brand and colour for mosaic foliage) and even loves mosaics and helped set up the studio last week for workshops.

We have found a new tile distributor (2!!!) and will introduce these very gorgeous tiles so the students can make more interesting mosaics. We have a gigantic sample box and yesterday we road tested some of them. They are yummy.

It’s now always about what you make in mosaics but about what mosaics make out of you.

Now to get ready for huge day working on panels tomorrow, with Polly, Rebecca, Mosaicking Mum …..and planning out the Big Ball…..The weather is wonderful, the smell of
Spring is soooooooooooo good. I had a break today, went out with a girlfriend for an hour’s lunch for her birthday and arrived home for dinner!

I am now planning new workshops based on something awesome for next year. I cannot wait…to get going on it. Everything “fell into place”…..it’s been brewing in my sub-conscious for a long time and it was a “mosaic moment”.

People wondered what I was doing, standing in the middle of a huge room, holding two huge mugs of coffee and not moving….I was “in another place”. Don’t you love those “light bulb” moments.

The big seating project for Queen's Park Numbellie Seat is really looking great and we will also apply the remaining mosaics to the "Big Mosaic Ball". We will literally have a ball making this wonderful public artwork!

Well, I am off to get the glue bags ready, prepare some wine bottles for Sunday's wheelbarrow foliage, stack the china for breaking up - so much fun!

I will have to get the smashing wall set up again this Sunday, hmmmm....those were the days, when the tv programs showed up using the smashing arch! Trip to Australia Zoo

Join us at Australia Zoo on Monday 12th October 2009.

A group of mosaic addicts and mates are going to Australia Zoo to see the Mosaic Murals, Tribute to Steve Irwin and take lots of photographs and enjoy all the zoo has to offer.
We may also do a tour of the animal hospital.

If you would like to come with us - many are in Brisbane for the MAANZ Symposium and it's a great opportunity to visit the zoo and have a lovely day out!

Also, on Sunday 10th, at OzMosaics Studio we will have an afternoon of videos and slide shows and mural making! Contact Sandy to find our more info!

Positive mosaic vibes and thoughts

I don't know what it is, but so many people find one themselves in a mosaic quandary of "can't started"...

Life seems to be throwing some huge curve balls! All over theglobe it's one ;thing after another, I often wonder we can handle all thenews..Tweeting, Face Book, Internet, TV - we know of every good and badthing almost immediately. I tend to turn it all off and find it makes sensefor a while.Do you find yourself all fired up one minute and then suddenly caughtbetween "life" and "art? In a dream mosaic world, one could rise, slinkinto the studio and work on mosaics in a trance-like mosaic nirvana, but theoutside world seeps in and we are all affected in some manner by what isgoing on around us - from joyous moments to tragedies and in between.

I often find I only work and get things completed with absolute deadlinesand when the pressure comes off a bit, instead of getting on with other jobsto complete, I tend to do nothing and then stress out when deadlines loomagain. I think we need to take time out to smell the roses or just mullover things as we move through our days and nights.No matter how great the work area, it's easy to be diverted. I find I amtruly blessed with amazing mosaic mates and we all prop each other up andinspire each other.

If you have a caring nature, you will feel the vibesand the media constantly feeds us down the line. Be pleased with whatever progress you make, I think it's fantastic to have lots of mosaics on the go .believe me they get completed when "it's their turn".

I would find it hard to work on one project continually - havingother work in progress projects keeps the imagination fired. I have somethat have been waiting for completion for 8 years and I still love them asthey are! I call them my "education pieces" LOL!So cheer up and wallow in whatever you feel like, from a big tub of thinsetto a bucket of ice-cream.

There is nothing I like better than roam thegarden, but I get upset as I don't get time to work in my garden any moreand I really WANT to, but something has to give to allow that and I am toobusy finishing off a big mosaic project. I have to discipline myself everymorning or I could easily be on the couch watching movies all day or rushingout to buy new pots and plants for the garden.

What I try to do, is set"me times" - reward times to do what I feel like doing and that does work.A day off to read, sleep, be with Dave or whatever and feel absolutely noguilt. I look forward to those me dates!

Saying that, I am absolutelyhappy in my studio working on mosaics 24-7, that's when I am in the zone. I think reading and seeing other's accomplishments can also be daunting as well as inspiring. I find that by rejoicing in other's mosaic accomplishments and being happy for them makes me feel good.

Every piece of mosaic art made on this planet is a good thing. Sharing the joy of mosaicsin the community really keeps you grounded and surrounded by positive vibes.Mosaics for money, mosaics for home, mosaics for the pure bliss of it - itall has its place. Many of my mosaic mates who are the happiest souls,have no intention of seeking out commissions but make mosaics for theirhomes, gardens and special friends. They are always SO happy.

I suppose they are mosaic stress free LOL!

Major stress events are awful and sometimes it's harder to bounce back and also some things happen in life with friends, family, illness, finances,work, acquaintances that are hard to figure out, we can't see the biggerpicture, but hold close and dear the people you love and care for and goodmates and strive to encourage others.

Anger, resentment, frustration,guilt are soul destroying and make it hard to go out and "slay dragons".When you are on an emotional high it's such a good feeling - try and pictureyourself making mosaics and running with it...go and write down youremotions on a plate, put it in a plastic bag and smash it with a hammer or chuck it on the ground.

It's a fabulous feeling and then eat somethingdelicious and run into the studio and glue some of the bits down. Put on fabulous music in the studio. Email a mosaic mate and tell them what youare doing. . Start a mosaic pot or a garden wall, and put the brokenpieces on it, leave the felt pen messages on the smashed plate. When yougrout they will wash away.

Let them wash away in more ways than one.Ok, now I am rambling but when you need to connect with positive mosaicvibes email me and we can prop each other up. I am experimenting withLaticrete epoxy at the moment and should be doing the "big project".

I am always doing that and need now to go and WORK!...but the epoxy and what I amdoing to it is very, very, exciting.Thanks for the PS - I am blushing. Next year I will have more time (???)and will whip something special up for you.

I don't usually sell my ownart, I find it hard to part with. I am weird. I teach and do commissionsetc but when it comes to my own art, I like to keep it - but next year I am thinking of making pieces for my own exhibition or part of an invitedartists Exhibition in Brisbane in MANA, and if that happens one will haveit's name on it for you!

I already have an idea in mind, but this year it's Year of getting the big projects done! Talk about positive thinking, Laticrete's factory burned down a week ago in Brisbane and they are like Phoenix rising! Talk about positive thoughts, action and vibes. It's contagious! They are bouncing back and everyone is applauding!

Get out of bed and say ACTION STATIONS- It's my mosaic day! I suppose I always search for the middle ground, onehas to find a balance in life to achieve your goals whilst caring andsharing the good and bad times around us. I think we need appreciate the good times in our own lives and to use thetime wisely, as we never know what's around the corner..so don't be scaredto be happy, to feel well, to have things to do, don't feel you don't havethe right to get out there and do your thing..make the most of what you haveand shine.

Turn off the depressing thoughts and turn on the mental bright lights..you know the feeling, when you are around positive people it makesyou feel good, be a beacon and be kind in the process.

It can be kind oftiring being happy..someone once told me it's easier to be down thanup..it's easier to procrastinate than work..it's easier to wallow than work..I know this..LOL...I know it takes quite a bit of effort to change my attitude on any given day, but WOW, what a feeling when I do.it's a hugetonic and suddenly you are Slaying Dragons again, and guess what? it's contagious and others around you reflect your mood or if they don't it's agood idea to separate yourself in your own little mosaic world for a selfish little while. Enough of my weirdness!

It's all meant with good intention, but I have to go and GLUE down now! Get excited about something is my advice and radiate positive stuff.

Workshop - Bribie Island Community Arts

Had a fabulous day working and teaching the ladies from Bribie Island Community Arts!
We have enlarged the logo SPLOT and it's exciting discussing what to mosaic on the logo for the wall of the community arts building!

The ladies are very inspired and we laughed a lot! Tomorrow is day two of the workshop and we will finish the sample gOzunda's and make samples of floral 3-D mosaics and more! The day simply flew and Dave's detailed map and instructions directed them safely and easily to studio OzMosaics!

I look forward to seeing the new mosaic addicts tomorrow! Will take photos! Last Saturday we had a wonderful beginner workshop and I had great news! I sold one of my favourite mosaic murals at the Brisbane Boys Grammar Art Show. I miss it already but hope it has a lovely new home to live in.

mosaic madness

have that “berringdoo” feeling again…..fantastic! Just spent an hour in my stash room digging in boxes – half an hour to work out how to get in the stash room and climb over mountains of mosaic hordes….I know where things are it’s just hard reaching them….yelling to himself to come and take something from me whilst pirouetting on a box of bottles…dangerous but necessary in my stash room.

Oooooh it was so good to be in there. I am now putting together two sculptures and two hanging pieces for Grammar art Show coming up.
It’s so creative to be on the loose in SandyLand again….no holds barred, the old old creative juices are boiling over.

Popette is on her way over to work on her 30:30…I am planning mine before she gets here…..the 30x 30 boards Dave just made up look so small!
Hmmmmm hmmmm hmmmmm…….but where there is a will there is a mosaic way. Hard to hold myself back…but I have an idea or two that have been festering for a few months.

I can’t stop thinking of other mosaics to make……the flood gates are open again…..I called a piece Flood Gates last year….memories….

Anyway, I recommend a regular trip to the stash room as a mosaic tonic.

Had a fabulous workshop here yesterday and 5 of them already were mosaic addicts so it felt really really really good to be able to inspire them even more….
Dave just repaired an old mini wheelbarrow for me…..it’s so beautifully rusted…..guess what it’s going to be????
Have a good Sunday….I am looking forward to watching the Chef show tonight, grande finale~ whilst we mosaic of course…..

Sandy in Cairns…good on you for attending the show with your beautiful mosaics…I knew they day I met you in the workshops here you would be passionate about mosaics and I wish we lived closer to, but it won’t be long till you are here in October for a great time of mosaic nuttiness!...and who said I don’t like mosaic fish? One of my sons is a marine biologist ….. LOL….

Mosaic Swing and Sling!

Today I invented a new mosaic technique I am calling Sandy's Swing and Sling! It's how to do indirect mosaic technique on sticky plastic. I have hundreds of mosaics on sticky plastic and had to work out to how manage to reverse them all and have them keep intact to place all over the huge chair boards for the Ispwich Chairs. The Sandy Swing and Sling is working so well.

BFB also known and Beautiful Brenda, helped me do the Swing and mum did the Sling...whilst I did the Sticky Stanley knife cutting! Looking great! Shirley aka Polly helped me with the black paper background on Tuesday.

It's working so well! After we place the mosaics on the boards tomorrow with help from Cheryl and Lee we will be well on the way to the overall design, with an overview and artistic guide from Phillip on Saturday.

The workshop desks are piled high with mosaics and it's quite exciting! I am a bit cold and tired and Brad came for dinner with fish and chips and some champagne! Hard to keep going now!

We are very excited about the mosaics for the Ipswich Queen's Park Gardens - the joyous colour and mosaics made by the school students, teachers and parents and mosaic team are going to be spectactular in a stunning setting and the story woven into the mosaic tells of the Indigenous tribes and history of the area. More soon!

It's been a while since I posted here but life has been one gigantic mosaic rollercoaster!
The Loreto Murals are ready for installation in a week, Othilas mosaic mural workshops are over and the mosaic mural is installated in all it's glory at Stones Corner, Brisbane.

We are working on the huge mosaic seats for Queen's Park Ipswich. Workshops have been full all year and next weekend we are teaching workshops for mosaics all weekend at BGG, for Koala Conventions. Should be fabulous!

Studio is chaos as usual. We are doing a display at Beenleigh Library in August and attending the Full Frontal Tile Expot with Laticrete in August.

MANA is about to be launched and Club MozOz is finally running and the Social Club is live on OzMosaics website. Lots being updated as I can.

Some of us are attending the MANA symposium working on our 30x 30 entries. Time is flying by.

I am exhibiting work for sale at Brisbane Boys Grammar soon, making the mosaics now!

So much happening, even a visit from Bribie Arts for a workshop here, plus more murals towards end of the year.

Catch Up mosaics

2009 - busy busy busy making mosaics!
Classes have been fantastic! Mosaic workshops very creative and exciting.
The huge seating project at Queens Park Ipswich is coming along, 7 schools participating in the Numbellie Seat - Lighthouse Project.
A huge mosaic wall commission at Loreto College Brisbane and other exciting commissions are keeping team OzMosaics flat out!

The mural panels are now installed at Australia Zoo; one small panel still to be screwed to the walls, but everything is looking fabulous.

Workshops are busy and the new website is coming along. The webshop has a few more items to be uploaded and then it will be fully operational for Sandy's students and clients. A new club called MANA will be launched very soon and a new committee is working behind the scenes pulling it all together. Some great surprises are in store for members. Stay tuned!

A student and client club will also be started on OzMosaics website, called club mOzOz - fabulous benefits to members who love to mosaic - a great Perks Card for mosaic addicts.

So much to do! Sometimes some projects have to be reshuffled to get everything done, but all is well! I haven't posted here for a while due to huge workloads but should be all systems go in a couple of weeks.

I have the Steve Irwin Story almost completed, it's taken a while to write and it will be showcased on my website for participants who contributed to the mural making. Thanks again to everyone, Latricrete, Mini Movers Brisbane and mosaic addicts around the world. Publications have been showcasing the story - Laticrete Spotlight, BAMM, Tile Mag and more!

Tribute to Banjo Paterson, Man from Snowy River Mosaic "high country"

Mosaic for a swap: Palm Grove Australia: Sandy made a modern piece of mosaic art with strips of glass and decorative thinset (cement based adhesive). Streaking the thinset and layering curved wine bottle glass and textured glass, white and grey cement captured the elements of the outback palm grove and paper bark trees, and ghost gums.

Sandy Robertson - "High Country" Italian Orsoni Smalti and Thinset combo. I love all Banjo Paterson poems particularly The Man from Snowy River and this mosaic was inspired by the High Country of Australia. The rocks depict the rough terrain, the white thinset is "snow" as it greets and showers and the rider pushes the horse forward, ploughing through ice and snow. I loved using the Orsoni Italian Smalti - the texture and colours are divine and you can buy the smalti from my studio shop or online mosaic shop!

It's sold by a small piece or a lovely chunk!

The rider's drysabone looks great in smalti chunks and the horse has great beauty and grace with the adamento! I truly enjoyed making this mosaic art.

Sandy Robertson - Angel of the Morning - Pique Assiette "Balladiva"
This beautiful fine porcelain paint was found in an antique shop in CAnberra, Act whilst we were visiting Mark in CAnberra. The exquisite pink roses are porcelain and I broken them down with a hammer and rebuilt them to give a "blown rose" effect in the mosaic. It's delicate and simply deceptive. The mirror arms and legs just fell from my Leponitt mosaic cutters. I glued the pieces down in the mosaic with white thinset (available from OzMosaics STudio shop). Of course I nipped some china cups for the ballerina's tutu. A piece of paua shell (also available in the shop) adds a delicate angel wing. I dedicate this mosaic to Popette (aka Maureen) as she loves it so much and encouraged me to complete it.

Wow! Look at the installed mosaic at Ingham! The girls look great and so does the Wallaman Falls mosaic. I still can't believe we made the mosaic together at my mosaic studio for a workshop in 2 days and it flew home as extra luggage!

I adore the way the girls mosaiced the slate sides as I instructed them (an idea from my mosaic waterfall series at the studio) - it's fantastic! Imagine water running over this mural and tumbling to the rocks below. The whole park looks so beautiful, so Susan you and your community team are to be congratulated, I know the hard work involved in community art mosaic projects...I am so proud of you all!

Dave and I will have to travel to Ingham now to look at the park and the mosaic. The mosaic walk looks so good too! .... and the sign for the Park, "Gibbo's Garden" looks perfect on the new wall in the park.

The mosaic pavers must be so colourful. Tell the students I think they are very artistic and did an excellent job. I will never forget our weekend workshop of mosaic madness and the willingness of the three of you to throw yourself into mosaics, smashing wine bottles to make the water flow in mosaics, the mirror and the smalti...the cutting of the tiles and the excitement as we worked all night to complete the mosaic. The best thing is the friendships that are formed. Dave hurry up and get me to Ingham!

The first panel is completed and curing for sealing.
The project team with to thank Laticrete Australia for sponsoring all the cement, grout, waterproof membrane, thinset, sealers and more. Truly magnificent and we are so grateful for all the support, advice and donation. Photos coming soon and a mural in progress report! We are so busy making the mural, we have to find time to upload photos!
